Dear Friend of CEH,

In 2001, CEH filed lawsuits against manufacturers of children’s outdoor play structures who were exposing children to unsafe levels of arsenic and chromium. One year later, we are proud to announce that this strategy has been a success and has resulted in an industry-wide change.

The following manufacturers have agreed to no longer manufacture children’s outdoor play structures with arsenic-treated wood.

All American Playground, Inc.

Childlife

Creative Playthings

Custom Swings of Texas

Florida Playground & Steel Co, Inc.

Grounds For Play

The Howell Equipment Co.

Kidstuff Playsystems

Merrytime Play Systems

PlayNation Play Systems

Swingsets Inc.

Sportsplay Equipment, Inc.

UltraPlay Systems Inc.

Sincerely,

Michael Green

Treated Wood Industry Stops Using Arsenic!
Major Victory for CEH and Allies

February 2002

Dear Friend of the Center for Environmental Health,

I want to let you know about another huge victory for CEH and our allies: the pressure-treated wood industry recently agreed to stop using arsenic in their consumer products, such as children’s playsets and picnic tables. CEH, with several national allies, spent much of 2001 working to persuade the treated-wood industry to stop using arsenic.

Wood is pressure-treated for use outdoors to prevent rotting. Recently, the industry agreed to stop using the arsenic treatment for these consumer products. After a series of coordinated actions, including lawsuits by CEH against playground and picnic table manufacturers, the industry saw the writing on the wall.

This development has been compared to getting the lead out of gasoline. We combined our lawsuits with extensive advocacy on the policy level, including drafting precedent-setting legislation for San Francisco that banned City purchase of arsenic-treated wood for playgrounds and parks. We also worked with legislators on the state level to develop new laws to protect the public from the dangers of arsenic-treated wood.

At the same time, we worked with our national allies such as the Healthy Building Network (of which CEH is a founding member) to conduct extensive national advocacy campaigns against the use of arsenic, especially where children are exposed. For example, I testified at the Consumer Product Safety Commission and discussed the issue with key EPA staff.

This battle could only have been won with your support. Thank you for supporting our work to protect the public from toxic chemicals, and we hope you will savor your part in this great victory.

Sincerely,

Michael Green
