The Latest: Disney Exposed for Selling Lead-Contaminated
Children’s Jewelry For over eighteen months, CEH has tested hundreds of items of children’s jewelry purchased from major national retailers. Over a third of the pieces we have tested were found to contain dangerous amounts of lead. Other studies of jewelry purchased from these stores have shown similar results. Young children are most at-risk from lead in jewelry, as they still have developing brains and nervous systems, and toxic substances can harm their development. The blood brain barrier has not fully formed in young children, which increases the chances of severe damage from lead exposure. A child's body can absorb up to 50% of ingested lead. Even when exposed to small amounts of lead levels, children may appear inattentive, hyperactive and irritable. Children with greater lead exposures can have problems with learning and reading, delayed growth and hearing loss. At high levels, lead can cause permanent brain damage and even death. Lead can also bring long-lasting harm to the environment. The toxic metal does not dissolve in water or biodegrade, dissipate, decay, or burn. Lead in the environment can pollute soil and water, harming fish, waterfowl, plankton and other aquatic organisms. Drinking water can also be polluted; the Environmental Protection Agency estimates that drinking water is the source of about 20 percent of Americans' lead exposure. This is a special risk for infants who are fed formula mixed with contaminated water. The Center for Environmental Health needs to continue our groundbreaking
work investigating the hazards of lead in jewelry and getting these toxic
trinkets out of stores. However, in order to continue this work, we need
your help! Please join us, to stop the sale of jewelry that exposes children to lead poisoning that can cause brain damage, birth defects, and other diseases. Thank you for your support.
