What We Do

Strengthening Laws

Center for Environmental Health is the coordinator of CHANGE (Californians for a Healthy and Green Economy), a statewide chemicals policy reform coalition formed last year.

Under current rules, the health effects of chemicals are tested on an unwitting public, and products are removed from the market only after they have been proven to make people sick. The coalition aims to promote state policies and legislation that will require companies to prove the safety of their products before they are allowed on the market. CHANGE is also working to prevent corporations from hiding under the rubric of "trade secrets" to conceal health data on chemicals from the public.

CHANGE's strategy is holistic, and its impact extends beyond policy. Chemicals policy is a strategic organizing point and our approach is to pursue this reform while also broadening the mandate for health justice, nontoxic jobs, poison-free schools, and a green economy.

Setting the Standard for Lead-Free Water Filters

We exposed lead poisoning risks from home water filters that were actually adding lead to "filtered" water. Center for Environmental Health's lawsuits forced the entire filtration industry to adopt lead-free materials.  See what else we’ve accomplished in our first 10 years.
